How to achieve environmental justice?


Using the law to protect the environment is on the rise at the local, national, regional, and global levels of governance. By focusing on environmental justice, this Just Peace Movie Night & HagueTalks event highlights the critical role that the law plays in protecting the environment and ensuring that justice is served for both people and the planet.

How severe is ecocide as a form of environmental injustice? How does Mozambique achieve environmental justice? How will Tuvalu’s case at the International Court of Justice help receive climate justice?

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

  • Mert Kumru is an avid campaigner for World Youth for Climate Justice here in Europe. Now that climate justice is becoming a much more broadly accepted term, Mert offers us the opportunity to learn more about seeking justice for those affected by climate change.
  • Jojo Mehta, a Co-Founder and Executive Director of Stop Ecocide International. Jojo has been at the forefront of the movement to establish ecocide as a crime at the International Criminal Court. Her extensive experience in coordinating legal developments, diplomatic traction, and public narrative, coupled with her clear and engaging communication style, make her an inspiring and knowledgeable speaker to address the pressing issue of environmental justice.
  • Get ready to be inspired by Justice Luís António Mondlane, the esteemed Chief Judge of the Criminal Section of the Supreme Court. With a remarkable background in law and a wealth of experience as President Judge of the SADC Court, he brings a powerful blend of expertise and passion to our event on environmental justice, leaving you captivated and motivated to drive positive change.
  • Vishal Prasad is an extraordinary campaigner for Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change and a dedicated advocate for World’s Youth for Climate Justice. With his unwavering commitment and passionate activism, Vishal will ignite the stage at our event on environmental justice, empowering you to join the global movement and fight for a sustainable future that our planet desperately needs.

Event moderator is Ida Simonsen, UN Youth Representative on Biodiversity and Food. As a farmer, activist and youth representative, She will be forever motivated by the belief that we need to address the most urgent crises of our time and safeguard the Earth’s carrying capacity for our fundamental rights and needs.

The event starts  by a Just Peace Movie Night, a movie screening about climate justice. A feature film called Anote’s Ark by Matthiew Ritz: which tells the story of the island nation of Kiribati and the serious threat they are facing with the rapidly rising sea levels caused by climate change. The film screening will be followed by a special HagueTalks and discussion with expert speakers. We’ll delve into the topic of ecocide, environmental justice, and how Mozambique and its Chief Justice is working to secure a more just future for its people.

Event is co-organised by Just Peace The Hague, Movies that Matter, a project run by The Hague Humanity Hub with the generous support of the Municipality of The Hague.
