In the frame work of the International day of Peace, join us for a HagueTalks on how to make change happen in our communities.
During this event we hear from three people for whom community means everything, and who inspire others to make sustainable change at a local level. How can we get our neighbours and friends to take action on big issues like climate change? How do local residents in cities like The Hague engage with the lofty concepts of peace and justice? What do you do when you want to create acceptance of all in a conservative society; how do you get allies? These speakers are working to make the world a more peaceful and just place, whether via tackling the climate crisis or supporting sexual rights. They will tell their stories of their dreams, their obstacles and especially, how they work to engage with their communities.
This HagueTalks is the kick-off event of the Just Peace Month 2021 #JPM21 – a five week-long annual event, to celebrate peace through justice. This year’s focus will be on ‘the human stories of peace and justice’. Residents of The Hague, the city of Peace and Justice, and HagueTalks audiences around the world will be able to learn more about the work of the international institutions through the stories of the individuals.
Event is opened by Saskia Bruines, vice mayor of the Hague.
ABOUT SPEAKERS
- Diane, LGTBI+ Human Rights Defender from the Shelter City project from Justice and Peace.
- Sjaak Kroes, The Hague City Poet. In his daily life, he is on the road outside, at his desk bicycle. On the street, in the woods or in dune parks.He looks at the world with a poetic eye.
- Raki Ap, civil servant at the Ministry of Interior and passionate public speaker on Indigenous Perspectives on Climate Change.

Event moderator is Hajar Yakoubi. Hajar was 18 years old when elected, through a public campaign, to be the UN Youth Representative for the Netherlands for a term of two years. She worked on topics related to Human Rights and Security but also on issues related to the Climate Crisis, Polarisation, and more than anything: Youth Participation. Her personal goal is to get more young people included in places of decision making in politics.
