Marjan Schippers

Ambassador of the Netherlands to South Sudan

As a diplomat, I listen to people and amplify their voices

“As a diplomat my work in South Sudan is motivated by unique resposibility, complexity and human dignity. To be one of the three EU resident Ambassadors and only one of the two female ambassadors residing in Juba, I carry a special responsibility to listen, to speak truth to power and give voice to the voiceless.

South Sudan’s complex challenges require innovative solutions. As a diplomat, I focus on building bridges and creating innovative partnerships for peace. While doing so, I put the people of South Sudan first. They are the core focus in my work.”

Marjan Schippers is holding her first Ambassador’s post as Ambassador to South Sudan. In her diplomatic career, spanning over 29 years, she held several postings, most recently as Head of Cooperation in Mali and at the Netherlands’ Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels.  In The Hague she was deputy Director International Trade Policy and Economic Governance at the Ministry of Foreign affairs and advisor international cooperation at the Prime Minister’s office.  She sholds an economics degree (RUG), graduated on deforestation, and a Masters from the College of Europe (Bruges).
