Mayor of The Hague

UN's 75th anniversary - a hopeful celebration in these difficult times

“The Hague plays a leading role in achieving UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 16: peace, justice and strong public services. In The Hague tens of thousands of people are working every day to build a more peaceful and just world. As a mayor of this city, I also want to offer young people a platform to participate. After all, it is about the future they want and the UN they need.

The 75th anniversary of the United Nations marks a significant milestone for international cooperation. A hopeful celebration in these difficult times. In the past months local governments have been at the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis. Local governments are prominent actors in the promotion of peace, justice and solidarity. Therefore, I believe that cities should be more closely involved in determining the course of the United Nations.”

Since 3 June 2015 Jan van Zanen has been the chairperson of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) and as such he is also the co-president of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). He was sworn in as the mayor of The Hague on 1 July 2020.
