The two teachers creating a level playing field for Georgia’s minorities: “We believe the key point of our mission is to teach the youth to take action.”

That’s how Ariz Dashdamirov and Kiamran Aphandiev, two public school teachers from Kvemo Kartli, Georgia, describe the purpose of their work opening up community centres among the minority Azerbaijani community.

The two, sometimes using their own resources, have helped get youths in the impoverished community they grew up in to have a better start in life by teaching them essential language skills “so they could integrate better in Georgian society” and also familiarising them with journalism and mass media.

In this video, the two winners of the annual Human Rights Tulip Prize talk about their motivations and what they have achieved so far.

“We are happy and very proud of the fact that by now the majority of our participants are girls.”

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind. The Human Rights Tulip is an annual award for individuals or organisations that promote human rights worldwide in innovative ways.
