In this HagueTalks event, we invite three activists and researchers from different countries in Asia to share how they advocate LGBTQ equality and justice through legal, cultural, and community empowerment approaches.
Is it possible to promote LGBTQ rights in regions that are relatively conservative in terms of politics, economy, and culture? What strategies do activists in these regions use to promote equality and justice? What achievements have they made and what difficulties do they face?
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
- Charlene Liu, is from Malaysia. She has 17 years of community leadership, commercial event management, and Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) advocacy experience. In 2009, she co-founded ShanghaiPRIDE, an annual festival run entirely by volunteers that promotes diversity and justice. Shen co-found Ladies Who Tech in 2016, a social impact community for women in STEM. Recently, she has been elected as a Member of the Executive Board, Women Representative of ILGA Asia.
- Yuli Kim, director of programs management at WorkPlace Pride. Yuli is Specialized in managing D&I programs within multi-cultural international organizations. she supports organizations in Japan and other challenging region to engage business in bridging the gap between D&I policies and practice by embedding organizational commitment.
Moderator of the event is Laurens Bistervels, a senior policy officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hague and focuses on human rights and China. He worked in Geneva during the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council and was an economic policy officer in Shanghai.
